The purpose  of the STEM Fiber Optics and Lasers course is to introduce students to the principles of fiber optics and laser technology.

Students use the Fiber Optics and Lasers trainer to explore the design and use of these technologies in realistic telecommunication applications  where they will be challenged to develop system solutions by playing the role of telecommunication engineers.

Students will need to adhere to given specifications  and constraints  and come up with solutions in real-world situations.

Upon completion of the STEM Fiber Optics and Lasers course, students will be able to:

  • Understand optical fiber message transmission
  • Explore the elements of a single optical fiber in relation to the communication process
  • Examine the process of manufacturing optical fiber
  • Demonstrate the effects of light attenuation and bending losses in fiber optic cables
  • Realize the importance of both attenuation and eliminating/ minimizing the effects of bending losses to provide reliable communications
  • Describe reflection vs. refraction
  • Explore how light interacts with fiber optics and lasers
  • Transmit and receive digital data through an optical path
  • Explain the importance of using optical repeaters to convey information over great lengths of fiber optic cable
  • Discover through experimentation the significance of the junction of light between the transmitter’s light source, the optical fiber, and the receiver’s detector
  • Understand the importance of proper optical coupling to provide reliable communication in a fiber optic link
  • Design innovative solutions to real-world problems, challenges, wants, and needs
